What Is the Heart of Palm Pasta?

If you haven’t seen or tried the heart of palm “noodles” or  “rice” by now then you may be wondering what I’m talking about in this post of recipes.

Or perhaps you’ve heard of them but you still aren’t sure how they taste or what they are made from.

The most common brand of this product is Palmini. This brand of low-carb and gluten-free products is made from hearts of palm and it is a fantastic substitute for traditional wheat pasta that many dieters try to avoid these days.

If you’re like I was a year or so ago, the heart of palm veggie may be something that is completely new to you, so I thought I’d share some of what I learned about it with you.

The hearts of palm are a type of vegetable that is harvested from the inner part of a growing bud of palm trees.

Not all palm trees per se, but a few types that are most commonly used are the coconut, juçar, acaí palm, palmetto, and sometimes the peach palm variety.

I never knew there were so many different types of palm trees, did you? In my research, I’ve learned from a couple of different sources that the heart of palm is produced in a lot of different areas around the world, but turns out that most of the hearts of palm we get here in the United States are produced in Costa Rica.

Heart of Palm is also pretty nutritious for us on top of being tasty. It is high in fiber, has a decent protein amount ( for a noodle substitute), and it also contains nutrients such as manganese, iron, and vitamin C.

All things that I’m trying to get up in my daily food intake so these noodles are a great addition to any low carb or gluten-free diet.

What Does Heart of Palm Taste Like?

You may be curious about what the heart of palm noodles tastes like and perhaps even a little leery to try yet another low-carb pasta alternative.

Listen, I totally get that, because I, like many of you, have tried so many pasta alternatives over the years that I’ve had my share of huge letdowns but thankfully I have kept trying which eventually lead to some great victories.

I count the hearts of palm products as one of those victories if you’re wondering. In fact, I have become a huge fan of using the Palmini brand of the heart of palm noodles in my home. My family and I love the texture and the very mild flavor.

I’ve heard the “experts” and others say that the heart of palm taste is a lot like artichokes because they are light, mild, and crunchy.

Some go on to say they look similar to white asparagus, but I think they look more like bean sprouts just a little thicker and crunchier.

The great thing about them in my opinion is that their flavor is very neutral and they take on the flavor of whatever sauce or ingredients you pair them with.

They are hearty noodles so they can withstand many forms of cooking such as baking them, blanching them in boiling water for a softer texture, being sautéed, tossed in a marinade, or even just eaten straight out of the can on salads.

Should I Boil Heart of Palm Pastas Before Using Them?

Do I have to boil these noodles before I eat them? This is a question that I get often from readers on my recipes using the Palmini Noodles (you’ll see those recipes in the mix below).

My answer is always the same, that is all a matter of preference.

I say this because it is all about the texture of the pasta you like. Since the heart of palm noodles are firm and have a soft crunch to them many people like them much better if they boil them for 10 to 15 minutes first before adding them to the recipe.

This definitely softens their texture and makes them closer to a pasta texture but don’t mistake what I say here for me saying they will have the exact texture of pasta if you boil them because they will not.

While it makes them softer and enjoyable they are still pasta made of a crunchy vegetable so of course, they will still have a slightly different texture than the traditional wheat noodles, but boiling them does improve a lot in my opinion.

If you enjoy your pasta more on the al dente side and with a good amount of texture then I wouldn’t boil them in recipes where you plan to use the pasta in a slow cooker or a recipe that requires a longer baking time.

For the recipes in this list below refer to the author’s directions as to whether or not the pasta should be pre-boiled before using them in the recipe you looking over.
