What Ingredients Are In This Healthy Snack Mix?
This is just a quick overview of the ingredients that you’ll need for a simple homemade snack mix. As always, specific measurements and step-by-step cooking instructions are included in the printable recipe box at the bottom of the post.
This Savory Nut and Cheese Snack Mix recipe is the kind of snack that everybody loves eating by the handful. It’s filled with different nuts, savory coconut chips, and some crunchy cheese bites that are all coated in some flavorful seasoning.
Almonds: start with fresh raw almonds. You can choose to do the ones with the brown outer coating on them or you can get the blanched ones where the outer skins have been removed.
Either will work fine, but it is important to get raw unseasoned nuts because you don’t want things getting too salt when you season them later.
Hazel Nuts: I love hazelnuts. I like that they are small and not as hard as almonds so it helps with having lots of textures in this snack mix. I also love the flavor they bring to any dish. Again, skin on or off will work but make sure they are raw and unseasoned also.
Unsweetened Coconut Flakes: Okay, so for the coconut it is important that you get the large shaved pieces of coconut and not the shredded ones.
I get mine in bulk from Azure standard but a lot of health food stores have them as well as Amazon. You can see the size of the coconut in my mix. That is the kind that works perfectly!
They also need to be unsweetened because you want to avoid the carbs or sweetness from the sugar since we are going for a savory and salty snack here.
These large coconut flakes take on all the flavors of the seasoning and you’ll love how they taste and look in your snack mix. You’ll be surprised how savory they can be and man that chew they bring to the mix is fantastic!
Cheese Bites: When it comes to the cheese element of this snack mix I love to use the Gouda variety of crunchy cheese bites. I love the strong flavor of the Gouda and how well marries with the nuts and seasonings.
Make sure when you are shopping for your cheese bites that the ingredients are not full of trash fillers and that they are all cheese so it keeps the carbs down. You can use any flavor of cheese you can find locally or that fits your tastes.
Seasoning: This is the best part that ties all the other ingredients together. This seasoning reminds me of that yummy flavor you get from the traditional Chex Mix. Tangy and salty and oh so savory.
It is just a simple set of spices like garlic, onion, and seasoning salt balanced with a tangy kick of Worcestershire Sauce. Add a little oil for toasting up the nuts and you’ll have a delicious combo for a flavor snack mix.
Variations To Use To Make This Low-Carb Snack Mix Your Own:
- Replace the hazelnuts with peanuts, pecans, or macadamia nuts
- Add your favorite low-carb crackers
- Toss in some sunflower or pumpkin seeds for more variety
- Switch out the Gouda Cheese Bites for cheddar or parmesan cheese wisps you can find at any store
- Don’t like coconut flakes at all, that’s fine try something like pork rinds instead for even more crunch
- Experiment with the seasonings (keep reading below the tips for ideas on that!)
Recipe Tips & Helpful Tricks
The Crunch Factor. You can very easily use other low-carb crackers and crunchy cheese whisps, to make this a little more to your taste.
Maybe throw in some pieces of flavored pork rinds to add even more flavor and bulk to this snack mix. Remember, this recipe is very easy to customize to your preferences.
The Seasonings. You can also easily include other spices and seasonings to your preference if you don’t like this savory seasoning I have on the recipe card.
You could always do some Rosemary or Italian herbs, go with an Asian flavor, and add some five spices, give it a spicy kick with red pepper flakes, or you can always go with a homemade dry ranch seasoning.
I mean who would like a yummy ranch snack mix. I’ve made this one like that before and it is delicious you guys!
Cooking The Mix: Snack mixes like this are super easy to throw together and modify as we’ve mentioned and the cooking is just as easy. Just make sure you are staying near the oven while it cooks up.
Nuts and seeds can go from not toasted to burnt in a matter of minutes if you get busy and forget about them. These ingredients are expensive so watch them closely as they cook.
Here’s an easy clean-up tip as well for cooking. Use a baking sheet lined with either parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (this is what I use) when you bake it and it makes cleaning up afterward super easy.
Storing Leftover Snack Mix: Make sure to keep this snack mix in an air-tight container so it stays fresh longer.
If it isn’t kept airtight the crunchy cheese bite will go soft on you and then really add a nice texture to the mix when they are kept nice and crisp.
One thing is for sure no matter what you add to the mix or how you season your mix, you’ll enjoy having a savory healthy snack to munch on whenever you need one.

I am a southern girl through and through that loves to laugh, cook, read and spend time with family. My passions outside of home schooling my son are ministering to those in need and creating art in the kitchen! Every day is an adventure in our little house and I wouldn’t trade it or the chance to share here with you for anything!
Thank you for the recipe. I am a bit of a Chex mix addict. We make several batches each year at Christmas and give it away as gifts. I always have to detox myself in January and this mix really helps. I doubled the recipe and used raw almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, and peanuts. Instead of doubling the coconut chips I used raw slivered almonds to get another “chip effect”. It’s delicious!
Yay Amy, I love that it is helpful to you. I love a good salty snack mix and was happy to share it. Thanks for sharing how you changed it up too!
What are cheese bites?
Cheese bites are basically like crunchy freeze-dried cheese. There are many brands out there including a popular one called Whisps. I know you can find them in most stores here in the United States, but not sure if they can be found in other countries. If you can’t find them or order them through the links I share in my blog post, you can leave them out or sub some other item you like to snack on.
What would you sub for almonds? We have an almond allergy in our family but would love to try this!
You can swap it out for any nuts your family is able to eat. Walnut or pecans would be great too. If you can’t do any nuts you might be able to up the coconut flakes (use the big wide flakes) and maybe some pumpkin seeds and low carb crackers.
Uh, I don’t understand this “ ingredients are full of trash fillers”.
It was a typo we missed, I apologize. Of course, I mean make sure your cheese bites are real cheese and NOT trash fillers like: rice flour, maltodextrin, and other nonhealthy fillers that some companies put into their products. I hope that helps!
Great recipe and I WILL BE making this soon.
Thanks, Mary, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do here!
