In today’s Book Post I’m sharing more about the latest book, Midnight’s Budding Morrow, from Carolyn Miller and my personal review after reading it. This is the second installment of the author’s series Dusk’s Darkest Shores. In full disclosure, I was sent a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and 100% honest review.
Can real love grow between a wallflower and an unrepentant rogue?
Sarah Drayton is eager to spend time with her best friend at her crumbling Northumberland castle estate. Matrimony is the last thing on her mind and the last thing she expects to be faced with on a holiday. Yet she finds herself being inveigled into a marriage of convenience with her friend’s rakish brother.
When James Langley returns to his family’s estate, he can’t be bothered to pay attention to his responsibilities as the heir. War is raging and he wants only distraction, not serious tethers. But his roguish ways have backed him into a corner, and he has little choice but to obey his father’s stunning decree: marry before returning to war, or else. Suddenly he finds himself wedded to a clever and capable woman he does not love.
Sarah craves love and a place to belong, neither of which James offered before returning to the battlefront. Now everyone around her thinks she married above her station, and they have no intention of rewarding her for such impertinence. It isn’t until her husband returns from war seemingly changed that she begins to hope they may find real happiness. But can she trust that this rake has truly reformed?
When tragedy strikes, this pair must learn to trust God and his plans. Will they be destroyed . . . or will they discover that even in the darkest depths of night, the morning still holds hope?
My Personal Review and Thoughts On This Book:
This book took me on a bunch of ups and downs, it wasn’t as light-hearted as I normally read, but don’t get me wrong it wasn’t an unpleasant read.
I really enjoyed following along with the character’s story lines. What I meant is the author did a good job of helping us feel the pains, worries, and troubles that each of the characters were working throughout the pages.
Carolyn Millier did a great job developing the leading characters in the book. As I read along with the main female character, Sarah, I found myself hurting for us, because she tried but everyone treated her unjustly.
Sarah came from a likeable family, but she wasn’t on the “well to do” side so she hasn’t hand the easiest of lives, but after she takes a leap and moves into the rundown “castle” with one of her dearest friends things just seem to go against her no matter how hard she tried to make the best of the situation.
For those that enjoy love stories, don’t worry, that’s where the leading man, James, comes into the picture. The brother of her dear friend, that is battling some “demons” of his own ends up becoming Sarah’s husband of convenience at first, but eventually their relationship takes a turn for the better.
I think this is a great book that shows strong characters with faith in God, that falter like many of us do, and the story line does a wonderful job of showing us the power of forgiveness and giving people the second chances they could use.
I haven’t read the first book in this series, but from what I’ve learned from others, it was a good read as well. I’m happy to say that I was able to enjoy and follow along in this book two just fine without having read the first.
Since this one being so good, I’ve made some plans already on picking up book one in this series, Dusk’s Darkest Shores, to read this summer as well.
