About the book:
Straight from the pens of Amish and Mennonite women . . .
Ever wish you could visit with a group of Amish or Mennonite women over a cup of coffee? In the pages of Homespun, Amish and Plain Mennonite women swap stories and spin yarns while we listen in. Lorilee Craker, the bestselling author of Money Secrets of the Amish, collects these personal writings about hospitality, home, grief, joy, and walks with God. Hear from one woman who struggles with feeling inferior to her sister, from another about her longing for a baby, and from a third who accidentally bought stretchy material to sew her husband’s pants. Each woman’s story is a testament to the grace of God and the blessings of community.
Behind Amish romance novels and tourist spots and television shows stand real people, with longings and loves just like the rest of us. Every Amish and Mennonite woman has a story. In Homespun, you get to hear some of them.
My Personal Review:
I was so excited to get a chance to read and review this book here with you all on the blog. I have always been a fan of the plain and simple life and often read fiction books on the subject. So of course, I jumped at the chance to read this book since it followed women that live that lifestyle.
But what’s special about HomeSpun is that it is a nonfiction book written by some amazing women that live their daily lives in the Amish and Mennonite faith. The book is a great look into the lives of each of these women through their own eyes.
It was wonderful to read each of these stories and realize that although we all come from different walks of life and are varying ages we are all sisters in Christ and all share similarities in how we solve problems, relate to our families, and even how we struggle from time to time.
I as read each story I felt like I was sitting with a friend listening to her share about her life. I really enjoyed reading every single ladies writing, but one that stood out to me was On Appreciative Overnight Guests, by Linda Byler. Linda is a member of the Older Order Amish church and I have read some of the books she has written.
In this story, she shares openly about a time when her daughter and family were sleeping overnight with her and how things didn’t go quite as planned, even she put extra effort into making things perfect. I got tickled reading over the story because even though I am far from Old Order Amish, I saw myself in Linda. It reminded me of a time where I had a very similar experience with a family visit where nothing when as planned.
I could go on and on about this book and all the lovely ladies that share thier world with us, but I will save some for you to discover when you pick up your own copy of the book HomeSpun. I would highly reccomend it to anyone that enjoys real life stories that are inspiring and encouraging.
