About the Book Growing Kids with Character (from Amazon):

In Growing Kids with Character, Hettie Brittz helps you identify your child’ s natural bent and how that affects your parenting journey. Hettie’s famous tree metaphors show ways to let kids excel at being who they naturally are. Learn how to:

  • Cultivate your child’s unique way of encountering, following, and worshipping God
  • Disciple and discipline based on your child’s very own blueprint
  • Recognize your child’s strongest characteristics and apply that knowledge to everyday life
  • Speak your child’s unique dialect (or “tree language”) to foster effective communication
  • Help your child recognize and celebrate God’s individualized design for others

Discover how to use kids’ God-given personalities to guide them on their spiritual journeys and firmly establish their identity and purpose in Christ. Find the joy of parenting by a child’s natural bent and God’s supernatural wisdom!

My Personal Thoughts and Review:

Parenting, in my opinion, is one of the most difficult jobs there is, but it is also the most rewarding job I have ever had.  When my husband and I were new parents, we used to joke about needing a rule or handbook for taking care of infants. Like how my sleep-deprived brain could know what they were crying at 3 am.

Now that my son is nine, I can look back on those times and smile fondly, however, that instruction manual we joked about would still be nice no matter what the ages are, right? Since we are out of luck there, I am glad I can read books like Growing Kids with Character from Hettie Brittz. With the guidance of God above and some of the wisdom, she shares within these pages I know we will be on the right track to understanding our little guy and how we can guide him through life.

If you have been a follower of my book reviews very long, you may remember the first book I read from Brittz, called unNatural Mom: Why you are the Perfect Mom for Your Kids. If you haven’t seen that review, please check it out over here.  I learned a lot about myself as I read that book and I was excited to jump into this one with hoped to do the same.

Brittz developed and uses the Tall Tree Parenting Profile, which compares children as varying tree types, each of which takes its own amount of naturing and care to grow and prosper. She breaks down each personality profile down for us in these chapters with practical tips on how to encourage your child to be themselves and cherish their strengths.

In Growing Kids with Character, the author uses a lot of gardening references to help us understand the theory within the pages. I am not a huge gardening person, although I do enjoy growing a few things. So I did find myself struggling to follow along from time to time.  However, ultimately, I enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to applying some of her tips.

My main take away from Growing Kids With Characters would have to be just like each of us as mom’s our children are ultimately their own being and they will do well if we learn to accept them as they are and learn how to guide them along with their path.
