My homemade Nut & Fruit Trail Mix is super easy to make and great to have on hand when you need a quick snack. It would be a great snack for the whole family as it is great to pack for picnics, school lunches, camping trips, or on top of your favorite yogurt or oatmeal.

Is Trail Mix Healthy?
Trail mix can be a great healthy snack for adults and children alike depending on the ingredients and the quality of those ingredients.
Nuts of all kinds will provide a source of healthy fats and some protein, and both of those will help fue your body and keep you full longer than say a candy bar or a piece of fruit by itself.
Have the protein from the nuts with a balance of dried fruits and lessen any spikes in blood sugar that the dried fruit alone might have caused for some people.
But still dried fruit is something that needs to be light-handed when it comes to mixing up your trail mixes because though fruit can be a source of good carbs, there can be a point of overdoing it with all those sugars.
Another thing to keep in mind with dried fruits is that unless you are drying or freeze-drying them at home you’ll need to keep an eye out for those unpleasant additives like oils.
Certain oils have been known to do much harm to our bodies and need to be avoided so I highly advise that when choosing nuts and dried fruits you purchase the ones with no oils added or at least make sure the oils they do use are heart healthy.
I look for fruits that have no oils but I’m okay with those that have coconut oils in them since it is a much healthier option compared to canola or vegetable oils.
So by keeping those things in mind you’ll be well on your way to making a completely healthy and balanced trail mix for your snacking needs!
How To Make Nut and Fruit Trail Mix
There are no hard or fast rules when it comes to making this Nut and Fruit Trail Mix. You can mix and match all types of nuts or fruits to get the best combo for your taste buds.
My full process only takes about thirty minutes if I take the time to toast up the nuts before I mix all the ingredients for this trail mix.
If you don’t mind the nuts being raw and untoasted then you can have this done in under ten minutes. How great is that, right?
In general, you want to combine about 1/2 cup to 1 cup servings of a variety of ingredients from the examples below:
- Raw Nuts – like pecans, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, cashews, or peanuts.
- Raw Seeds – like pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, or sunflower seeds.
- Dried Fruit – like pineapples, cranberries, banana chips, apricots, purple or golden raisins, date pieces, dried apples, or even mango. There are so many great choices!
- Optional Mix-Ins – chocolate chips, unsweetened coconut flakes, small cookie or cracker pieces, freeze-dried cheese crisp for a savory element. Fruit and cheese have been known to pair well together.

How Should Homemade Trail Mix Be Stored
When it comes to storing your homemade trail mix, the most important thing to remember is that it will keep longer and stay fresher as long as the container is airtight.
I like to use mason jars and I’ve had the best luck with them when I add an oxygen absorber, but you can skip that if you don’t have any on hand. If you’re interested in grabbing some here are the ones I use.
When I want to take some with us on errands or picnics I just add some to a zip lock baggie and that works great for transporting the trail mix. It is so nice to have this on hand for a quick snack.
Most trail mixes will keep for a while if stored properly, but I never make more up at once that we can’t eat within 2-3 weeks.
Of course, this will depend on the freshness of the ingredients you have chosen to use and how air-tight your storage container is!

Where is the Best Place to Purchase Bulk Nuts and Dried Fruits?
A trail mix is only as good as the ingredients that go into it. So when you are shopping for your ingredients it is important to get good quality ingredients from suppliers or stores you trust.
With the nuts you’ll need for this Nut and Fruit Trail Mix, you’ll want to make sure they are as fresh as possible and if possible in the raw unsalted form.
This will give you full control over the amount of salt and oils that go into your trail mix. You can leave them raw for the recipe or roast them for some added dept of flavor.
It is just as important that you choose good quality dried fruits that are packed with added sugars or unwanted oils that were added during the drying process.
I just hate they most banana chips have added oils like vegetable or canola oil. Yuck!
Thankfully I’ve found a great bulk food supplier called Country Life Natural Foods that is a wonderful source of great nuts, seeds, and bulk-dried fruits.
They even have dried fruits that have very little sugar added to the fruit and you guys have unsweetened banana chips that only have two ingredients: bananas and coconut oil!

Some of the favorites that I always have on stock from Country Life Food are low-sugar pineapple pieces, date pieces, those no-sugar-added banana chips that we love, walnut halves, silvered almonds, and organic rolled oats!
I now purchase all these ingredients from this company and what they don’t have I can usually get from Azure Standard when needed.
Matter of fact I get my large flake coconut that is unsweetened from Azure standard in a 5-pound bag and it is amazing and stays fresh for a long time.
I use this coconut in lots of other recipes too, so check out these Savory Salad Toppers where they are the star of the show!
