These little Chia Seed Crackers are tasty and a healthy option for any snack time or even your party trays. They are crispy and savory and pair well with meats and cheeses and your favorite dips!
What is Needed to Make Healthy Chia Seed Crackers?
I’ve bought chia seed crackers online and at our local health food stores many times, but honestly, they can come in small packages and be kind of pricey.
So I’ve worked on and perfected a Crispy Chia Seed Cracker here at home that my whole family loves, yes, even my 15-year-old son loves munching on these crackers with his favorite dip or cheese.
I work hard to keep most of my recipes (I said most lol) of my recipes easy and made with easy-to-find ingredients.
I am happy to report that this cracker recipe only has simple ingredients, all of which can be found at most grocery stores.
With the following four ingredients, you’ll be able to mix up and bake some of the tastiest little chia seed crackers for your next party tray or for your daily afternoon snack time.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Chia Seeds: these small oval dark or pale brown seeds come from a flowering plant of the mint family, used in various foods to add fiber and micronutrients. Chia seeds are not only rich in minerals, omega-3 fat, antioxidants, and fiber but also help bind ingredients together when mixed with water. In this recipe they not only had flavor and crunch to the crackers they are also the amazing binder used to hold the crackers together, meaning these are egg-free and vegan crackers!
Almond Flour: though the chia seeds are the main star in these crispy little crackers the almond meal also adds some nice nutty flavor and a great texture to the crackers. Using almond flour helps us keep the carbs low and these crackers gluten gluten-free. If you are allergic to almonds or nuts, you can use some sunflower seed or sesame seed flour instead in the same amounts.
Spices: yes, I’m going to give myself permission to count “spices” as one component even though I use several to flavor these crackers. If you want to get technical about it and count each spice go for it, but these spices like salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika are spices most of us keep on hand. You can always swap out the spices and use your favorite or what you have in your pantry.
Water: hmm, does this even count as an ingredient? Of course, it does since it plays an important role in these crackers. The water is used in two different steps in these crackers. We use some of the water to mix in with the ground chia seeds to make our binder or our “chia egg”. Then we add the remaining water to all the ingredients to pull it all together into a rough dough ball.
What Steps Are Needed For Making Chia Seed Crackers?
Once you have gathered all your ingredients there are three easy steps you’ll need to perform before you get your crackers into the fridge to chill before baking.
Since we will be using the chia seeds as our binder, it’s important to divide them out into two portions. You’ll need to grind up some of the chia seeds in a coffee grinder, blender, or by hand if needed.
After the seeds are ground into a fine powder they then get mixed with some of the water and left to set for ten minutes or so while you mix the rest of the ingredients together and get out your tools needed for the next steps.
Mixing the cracker dough up is easy, and even if you have never made crackers before, you’ll have no problem with these.
Add all the remaining dry ingredients to a mixing bowl and mix in the now gelatinous chia and water mixture. Oh, and the remaining little bit of water.
Mix well with a spatula until the dough starts to form a dough. This will be a fragile dough, not one that will stretch.
You’ll need to carefully roll it out between two pieces of parchment paper to keep it from falling apart or crumbling. Buy trust the chia seeds to do their part in making the crackers stronger as they chill.
Roll the dough out and chill it for at least 30 minutes in the fridge before you cut it into the shape you want. Bake and let them cool before enjoying.
Does Cracker Dough Have To Be Chilled?
Yes, for this type of gluten-free cracker, the chilling time in the fridge is an important step that should not be skipped.
The chia seeds need time to completely soak up the water and bind the almond flour and spices all together so that when you score them into your shapes they will be sturdy and not break into pieces.
Refrigerating the dough also allows time for all the spices and flavors to marry well making for an overall better flavor profile in my opinion.
How Do I Store Homemade Chia Seed Crackers?
These crackers develop a wonderfully crispy texture in the oven if you roll them to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. The crunch is so nice so if you are a fan of that texture, you’ll want to take care to preserve it in storage.
The best way to store homemade crackers is in an airtight container such as a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid or perhaps a bowl with a good tight lid.
Keeping them out of the open air and away from any chance of moisture getting in is the most important step in preserving the nice crunch of any homemade cracker like these Chia Seed Crackers.
If stored properly these crackers should stay fresh for a couple of weeks, if they last that long, around here they don’t last more than a couple of days each time I make them!
What Can I Serve With These Crispy Chia Seed Crackers?
I love adding these crackers to any of my charcuterie boards that I make for parties or game nights. The fact that they are tasty and gluten-free means that more of my friends and family can enjoy them.
They are super tasty when served with any meats or cheese and they are nice and sturdy even though they are thin so don’t be afraid to serve them with your favorite dips.
Some of my favorite dips to serve them with are my Simple Buffalo Dip (like you see in the pictures) and my Spinach Artichoke with Bacon, or for a plant-based option there’s my Roasted Eggplant Dip.
All of these dips go beautifully with these savory chia seed crackers.

- Next place another piece of parchment paper over the cracker dough and roll it out to about a 1/4 inch thickness. Place the cracker dough into the fridge to chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- After the 30 minutes pull the Chia Seed Cracker dough out and use a pizza cutter or knife to cut the crackers into your desired shape.
