This Creamy Caramelized Onion Dip will be the ultimate party dip! It is so delicious and is loaded with the flavor of the sweet caramelized onion, Balsalmic Vinegar, and more all mixed into a creamy dip!
How Do You Make A Delicious and Easy Caramelized Onion Dip?
I’ve never been a huge fan of those tubs of French Onion dips that can be purchased in refrigerators of grocery stores. This is odd because I love sour cream and onions which make up those dips, but still, they were never my favorite dip.
But give me a good caramelized onion dip and that’s another story because I can eat the whole bowl if I’m not watching myself. Let me tell you friends there is a huge difference in flavor when it comes down to plain onions and caramelized onions.
When you caramelize onions it brings out the sweet and nutty flavors of the onions and when you add the onions to burgers, salads, and things like this dip it is just magical!
This dip is so simple and only has a few ingredients. All the ingredients are inexpensive and easily found at any grocery store. The toughest part of this Caramelized Onion Dip is the patience you need to caramelize the onions.
The caramelization of the onions can take up to 45 to 50 minutes because you need to do this low and slow so they have time to develop those deep rich flavors.
Trust me, I know it sounds like it may not be worth the extra time this dip takes but I promise you that it is! Once you have the onions nice and caramelized, which we will talk about more in the next section, the dip comes together super fast!
Here’s What You’ll Need For This Recipe:
- 8 ounces of very soft cream cheese
- 2 (430 grams) medium onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup of sour cream
- 1 tablespoon of low-carb brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon of Balsamic Vinegar
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dry onion flakes
- 1/4 black pepper
There are only three steps to this recipe really, including caramelizing the onions. Once you have the onions cooked down and ready to go simply toss all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix on high until well combined.
Lastly, add the dip to a bowl and cover it tightly and let it chill for at least an hour before serving. It will be deliciously thick and creamy.
How Do You Caramelize Onions?
For the longest time, I let caramelized onion intimidate me. I had seen so many do it on cooking shows but never thought it was something easiest enough for me to do but now I feel silly for ever being afraid to try them.
Truth be told, caramelizing the onions is a no-brainer and it really is super simple. All you need for basic caramelized onions is butter, olive oil, a pan, and the onion of course.
I hope you want to wait so long to try them as I did because you’ll love this dip and so will anyone you serve it to! Not to mention the onions go great on anything.
My husband and son love them and would eat them on everything if they could. They bring so much flavor to anything you add them to. My 13-year-old is a huge fan of them, so that says a lot to me,
Let’s take a look at the steps you’ll need to follow to get the perfect flavorful caramelized onions every time!
Choosing Your Onions – I love using white onions when I caramelize them simply because I love their flavor profile and they tend to be cheaper than the other onions. I have used yellow and red at times too and they were also delicious. I would recommend the white for this dip recipe but the caramelized red onions are perfect for burgers and salads. Yum!
Preparing The Onions – Peel the onions, then cut the ends off of the onion. Next, using a sharp knife, carefully halve the onion and cut each half into thin slices. The onions will naturally separate into half-rings.
Cooking The Onions – I recommend using a large skillet over medium heat. You want the pan hot enough to caramelize the onions but you want this to happen pretty slowly so you don’t burn the onions. I love using cast iron to caramelize my onions because they heat so evenly but any sturdy skill will work.
Before you add the onions to the skillet, you will need to add some cooking oil or butter, this will add flavor and aid in the cooking process. Also, don’t leave out the salt. This will help pull out the water in the onions as they cook.
Most caramelized onions will also call for some type of sugar, but I keep mine in the “no sugar added” category so I use a brown sugar alternative like Swerve or Allulose. It only takes a little and it is just to help with flavor and caramelization.
Remember time is your friend when caramelizing onions. Don’t rush it and let the onions cook as long as needed to get to that super brown and soft state. They will taste amazing!
Can This Creamy Caramelized Onion Dip Be Made In Advance?
This dip is one of those that just gets better as it sits. So the longer it has to chill and let all the delicious flavors marry together the better the overall flavor will be.
This dip needs at least an hour to chill after you make it, but I highly recommend you make it the day before the time you want to serve it so it has the maximum flavor.
You could even make this dip a couple of days before your party or event if you needed to. It is a fantastic timer saver in that aspect. Just store it in an airtight container with a lid until you are ready to serve.
Once you are ready to serve you can set the dip out for about 10 or 15 minutes beforehand so it has a little time to soften up and become dippable. The dip will be super thick and creamy when chilled.
How Do I Make this Caramelized Onion Dip a Warm Dip?
I generally serve this dip as a chilled dip at our gatherings but if you are more of a warm dip lover then you can totally take this dip in that direction.
If you do decide to serve it warm, I would even go a step further and add some shredded mixed into the dip so you get that nice gooey and string cheese pull that makes us all happy.
If you do go the route of adding cheese I think either Gruyere or Parmesan would work beautifully with the flavors that are in the onion dip.
To serve this dip hot, you’ll simply mix up the dip as per the recipe card then stir in 1/2 cup of your favorite shredded cheese, we prefer freshly shredded parmesan but any will work.
Next, add the dip to an oven-proof baking dish and place it into a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit and bake it for about 25 to 30 minutes until it is warmed through and bubbly around the edges.
What Low Carb Dippers Can I Serve With This Caramelized Onion Dip?
The possibilities are huge here people so just choose two or three of your favorites and place them on a serving plate surrounding your dip and enjoy. Here are a few of my favorites that would work out perfectly with this dip.
- Low Carb Cheddar Crackers: my little gluten-free and low-carb cheddar crackers are so easy to make and they pair well with dips like this one. Whip up a batch of these cute little round crackers and your guest will never know they are low carb.
- Two Ingredient Low Carb Almond Crackers: Not a fan of cheddar crackers? No problem, check out these tasty almond flour crackers from Low Carb Yum for your dip platter.
- Pepperoni Chip: I’m a huge fan of crispy pepperoni chips with dips. These little dippers couldn’t be easier. All you do is line a baking sheet with your favorite pepperoni and bake in the oven at 350 degrees until they are golden and crispy. What these little chips very closely as they will burn pretty fast if you are not careful.
- Fresh Veggie: When it comes to a dip try, I love to add at least two fresh veggie dipping options. I usually go with celery and some type of bell pepper slices because I just love the fresh juicy crunch both of these options add. But if you don’t like those two feel free to add any other nonstarchy veggie such as raw broccoli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, or even some sticks of raw jicama would be delicious.
- Trim Healthy Mama Shameless Crackers: This company has a great variety of keto, low carb, and gluten-free crackers that are tasty and affordable. You can find their crackers in plain, cheddar, spicy cheddar, or Everything’s Awesome (bagel seasoning). Check them out if you are interested. They work great with this and other dips.

In your instructions you mention worstershire sauce and dry mustard but it’s not in the ingredient list. Can you give me the amounts. I have a crockpot of onions cooking today and want to try this recipe!
Kindest Regards,

I’m sorry I am just seeing your comment. I updated the recipe. I omitted the dry muster as I’ve found now it is better without it and I only use 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire.
